Independence day! (Hari Kemerdekaan)
Gallery(adjust video settings for better quality)
Today we celebrated Indonesia’s independence day today (actually it was on the 17th but they have had marches/parades pretty much every day since then!) and it was a ton of fun- we had much more fun than we were expecting to have, mostly cause participating in the parades is way more fun than just watching them, although just watching them today was pretty fun too.
Today was also more fun because the students at our schools were marching so we got to hang out with people we knew before and afterwards, and there was a lot more style going on in general today; groups of kids with dyed red hair or indonesian flags painted on their faces, a group of cross dressers, and marching styles that deviated from the typical military-style clean-cut marching we had seen a lot of so far. For example, My favorite group was the one that had this routine: sat down in the road, then got up facing backwards, marched until they ran into the car behind them, and then did a “rewind” move to get back on track facing forward again.
Craig liked the group of guys marching in colorful sarungs (sarongs)… Unfortunately the traffic was so bad around them that we didn’t have a chance to stop our bikes for a pic. The finish line for the parade is a carnival that lasts into the evening, where all the participating schools are running craft stands or warungs (food booths.)
Riding home from the carnival, we encountered our host brother Wayhu in the back of a truck with lots of his schoolmates (dressed in blue in photo above) and we had a chance to get off our bikes and take some selfies with them. It’s amazing how integrated selfies make me feel. I mean, not only because it’s like “i did stuff with indonesians today, and here’s the proof!!!” But most of the time people get reeeeally excited to snap a photo with us, so it’s like an instant icebreaker, and it’s always an opportunity to chat with people.
(P.s. The word for “selfie” in indonesian is “Narsi.” How extremely appropriate! P.p.s…. Kids flipping off the camera in photos is universal.)

This visit made us so excited to see where our permanent site assignment will be. We find out on May 16th!
